Und das Königliche Observatorium von Greenwich steht als Nullmeridian für die Einteilung der Längengrade und ist damit der Bezugspunkt für Datum und Weltzeit.
Es gibt viele Gründe, das britische Königreich von See aus zu entdecken − mit einem Segelboot, fast so wie früher. Vom schottischen Edinburgh bis Land‘s End im Südwesten Englands − eine kurzweilige Entdeckungsreise über 1.500 Kilometer wilde Küste. Mal schroff und atemberaubend, dann malerisch-romantisch, mal typisch schottisch, dann typisch englisch, mal kurios oder schlicht unglaublich. Und immer geprägt vom tosenden Meer und den Gezeiten. Mit Mythen, Legenden, skurrilen Charakteren und spannenden Geschichten.
The coasts of the kingdom
Great Britain is an island nation, which is surrounded by the North Sea, the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean. Great seafarers such as James Cook and Sir Francis Drake called this land home. The first marine chronometer was made here. The Royal Observatory in Greenwich serves as the prime meridian for the division of longitudes, and is therefore the reference point for dates and universal time.
These are just some of the many reasons to discover the United Kingdom from the sea − in a sailing boat, almost like in the old days! An entertaining journey of discovery, spanning 1,500 km of wild coastline, awaits. The route goes from Edinburgh in Scotland to Land’s End in Cornwall, England’s southernmost county. The rugged and breathtaking scenery is sometimes picturesque and romantic, sometimes typically Scottish, sometimes typically English, sometimes curious or simply unbelievable. The whole route is shaped by the roaring sea and the tides, and is peppered with myths, legends, quirky characters and exciting stories.
