Der tschechische Künstler Alfons Mucha (1860-1939) gehört Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts zu den Vorreitern des Jugendstils. Praktisch über Nacht wird er in Paris mit seinen Postern für die Starschauspielerin Sarah Bernhardt berühmt. Doch auf der Höhe seines Ruhms verlässt Mucha Paris, um sein Lebensprojekt „Das Slawische Epos“ zu verwirklichen. 18 Jahre lang arbeitet er an dem monumentalen Bilderzyklus - und trifft am Ende auf heftige Ablehnung.
In den 1960ern entdeckt die Hippiekultur seine Bildwelt neu, seine Jugendstilposter erlangen Kultstatus. Bis heute inspiriert Mucha viele Künstler. Der Grafikdesigner Stanley Mouse, der Graffitikünstler Mear One und der Illustrator Yoshitaka Amano sprechen im Dokumentarfilm über seinen Einfluss auf ihre Werke. Dennoch ist Alfons Mucha vielleicht einer der berühmtesten unbekannten Künstler der Welt.
Der Dokumentarfilm erzählt die Geschichte des tschechischen Künstlers Alfons Mucha aus der Sicht seines Sohnes, des Schriftstellers und Bonvivants Jiří Mucha, mit einer Fülle von Re-Enactments, Animationen, Archivmaterial sowie Gemälden und Fotos.
MUCHA: THE STORY OF AN ARTIST WHO CREATED A STYLE
At the end of the 19th century, the Czech artist Alfons Mucha (1860-1939) ranks among the pioneers of the “Jugendstil”. Virtually overnight, he becomes famous in Paris by way of his posters for the star actress Sarah Bernhardt. But at the height of his fame, Mucha leaves Paris to realise his lifetime project “The Slav Epic”. He works on the monumental cycle of paintings for 18 years - only to be met by hefty disapproval on completion.
In the 1960s, the Hippie Culture rediscovers his pictorial world and his “Jugendstil” posters attain cult status. Mucha continues to inspire many artists even today. The Graphic Designer Stanley Mouse, the Graffiti Artist Mear One and the Illustrator Yoshitaka Amano talk about his influence on their works in the documentary. Nevertheless, Alfons Mucha is perhaps one of the most famous unknown artists in the world.
The feature documentary tells the story of Alphonse Mucha from the perspective of his son, the writer and bon-vivant Jiří Mucha, with an abundance of re-enactments, animations, archive footage as well as paintings and photos.
