Die neue Ära begann Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts in Berlin, München und Wien. Drei Grafiker setzten erstmals die Produkte der Industrialisierung neu in Szene: Autos, Zigaretten und Modeartikel wurden jetzt auf große Flächen projiziert, mit einer neuen Drucktechnik vervielfältigt und an Hauswände und Litfaßsäulen geklebt.

Die drei Künstler hießen Lucian Bernhard, Ludwig Hohlwein und Julius Klinger, und sie veränderten die Werbung für immer. Sie verstanden sich als Gebrauchsgrafiker, deren Aufgabe es ist, ein Produkt, eine Marke oder ein Ereignis in den Vordergrund zu setzen − ob sachlich, emotional oder als humorvolle Werbegrafik. Die Dokumentation erzählt zum ersten Mal die Geschichte und Arbeitsweise dieser Grafikkünstler und zeigt, wie das Plakat innerhalb von wenigen Jahren die Werbung revolutionierte.

Plakat − the birth of modern advertising graphics

The new era began in Berlin, Munich and Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century. For the very first time, three graphic artists put products of industrialisation in a new setting: cars, cigarettes and fashion articles were now projected onto large areas, duplicated by means of a new printing technique and pasted on house walls and advertising pillars.

The three artists, Lucian Bernhard, Ludwig Hohlwein and Julius Klinger, changed the face of advertising forever. They considered themselves to be commercial graphic artists, whose job it was to place a product, a brand or an event in the foreground - whether objectively, emotionally or as humorous advertising graphics. For the first time, the documentary recounts the story and working methods of these graphic artists and shows how the placard revolutionised advertising within the space of a few years.
