Das Dokudrama erzählt die Geschichte des Kieler Matrosenaufstands am Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs. Im Zentrum stehen der Matrose Karl Artelt, der an der Spitze des Aufstands steht, sowie seine Verlobte Helene Hartung und deren Bruder August. Kiels Gouverneur Souchon will den Konflikt ohne Blutvergießen lösen und holt den SPD-Politiker Noske dafür nach Kiel. Noske kann die Rebellion zwar beenden, doch der Matrosenaufstand ist die Initialzündung für eine revolutionäre Bewegung, die im November 1918 das Deutsche Reich ergreift und zum Sturz der Monarchie sowie zum Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs führt.
Zeitzeugenberichte und historisches Bildmaterial ergänzen die Spielhandlung des Dokudramas. In Interviews reflektieren die Politiker Björn Engholm und Sahra Wagenknecht sowie Flottillenadmiral Kay-Achim Schönbach die Bedeutung der Ereignisse für den Beginn der deutschen Demokratie.
1918 − the sailors' revolt
The docudrama tells the story of the sailors’ revolt in Kiel at the end of the First World War. The story centres around the sailor Karl Artelt, who heads the revolt, as well as his fiancée Helene Hartung and her brother August. The governor of Kiel, Souchon, wants to resolve the conflict without bloodshed and summons the Social Democrat politician Noske to Kiel with this objective in mind. Although Noske is able to end the rebellion, the sailors’ revolt is the fuse for a revolutionary movement which takes a grip on the German Reich in November 1918 and leads to the fall of the monarchy and the end of the First World War.
Reports by contemporary witnesses and historical footage supplement the plot of the docudrama. In interviews, the politicians Björn Engholm and Sahra Wagenknecht as well as the Admiral of the Fleet Kay-Achim Schönbach reflect upon the significance of the events in relation to the beginning of German democracy.
