Origami ist die alte japanische Kunst des Papierfaltens. Doch eigentlich müsste man sagen: Origami ist der Versuch, die Prinzipien der Natur durch Papierfalten zu kopieren. Alles, was sich in der Natur entwickelt, ist gefaltet: Blütenknospen, Flügel, unser Gehirn, unsere Gene. Leben ist Faltung und Entfaltung. Durch das Erkennen und Verstehen von Faltungen in der Natur hoffen Forscher aus Wissenschaft und Technik, komplexe mathematische Probleme zu lösen oder einen ganz praktischen, technischen Nutzen etwa für Airbags, Weltraumteleskope oder Stents zu haben. Das Besondere an Origami: Energie- und Materialeinsatz sind minimal. Die Wissenschaftsdokumentation führt in eine Welt, in der sich Objekte scheinbar ohne menschliches Zutun falten und entfalten, und zeigt Prozesse, die das menschliche Auge sonst nicht wahrnehmen kann.


The origami code - scientists uncover the power of folding

Origami is the old Japanese art of paper folding. But one should actually say: origami is an attempt to copy the principles of nature by paper folding. Everything that develops in nature is folded: flower buds, wings, our brains, our genes. Life consists of folding and unfolding. By recognising and understanding folding mechanisms in nature, science and technology researchers hope to solve complex mathematical problems or simply find practical and technical uses such as in airbags, space telescopes or in stents. A special feature of origami is that energy and material requirements are a minimum. The scientific documentary leads us into a world in which objects apparently fold and unfold without human intervention and illustrates processes which the human eye cannot otherwise perceive.
