Steppenwolf ist eine der legendärsten und zugleich rätselhaftesten Bands in der Geschichte der Rockmusik. An der Grenze zwischen Mainstream und psychedelischem Underground eröffnete ihr Song „Born To Be Wild“ den Kultfilm EASY RIDER und wurde zur Hymne einer ganzen Generation. Der neue, harte Sound von Steppenwolf war ein Stich ins Herz des „Summer of Love“ und beendete das Hippie-Zeitalter. Es ist kein Zufall, dass sie die allererste Band war, die das Wort „Heavy Metal“ in ihren Texten verwendete.
Was aber nur wenige Menschen wissen: Die Band Steppenwolf hatte als Gravitationszentrum zwei deutsche Auswandererkinder, die sich zunächst in Toronto trafen, bevor sie gemeinsam nach Kalifornien weiterzogen - Sänger John Kay (geboren als Joachim-Fritz Krauledat) war ein Kriegsflüchtling aus Ostpreußen. Bassist Nick St. Nicholas (geboren als Karl Klaus Kassbaum) stammte aus einer angesehenen hanseatischen Familie.
Born to be wild − The story of Steppenwolf
Steppenwolf is one of the most legendary yet most enigmatic bands in the history of rock music. At the crossroads between mainstream and psychedelic underground, their hit "Born To Be Wild" opened the cult film EASY RIDER and became the anthem of an entire generation. Steppenwolf's new, hard sound was a stab in the heart for the "Summer of Love" and ended the hippie age. It is no coincidence that the Canadian-American rockers were the very first band to use the word "heavy metal" in their lyrics.
But a little known-fact is that this mystery-shrouded quintet had two emigrant children in its midst. The pair met in Toronto, before moving to California together. Lead singer John Kay (born Joachim-Fritz Krauledat) was a war refugee from what was then East Prussia. Bassist Nick St. Nicholas (born Karl Klaus Kassbaum) came from a well-to-do Hanseatic family.
