In einer Sturmflutnacht an der Nordseeküste 2007 bringt der junge Hofarbeiter Iven die dreijährige Wienke, Tochter des Deichgrafen Hauke Haien und seiner Frau Elke, nach Hamburg und setzt sie vor einem Kinderheim ab. Iven selbst wird Türsteher auf dem Kiez in St. Pauli. 15 Jahre später steht unerwartet eine seltsame junge Frau vor ihm, die von ihm verlangt, dass er sie an die Küste bringt und ihr hilft, ihre Eltern zu finden. Sie will wissen, wer sie ist und woher sie kommt. Widerwillig bringt Iven sie ins Dorf Stegebüll an der Küste, denn auch er hat die unheilvolle Vergangenheit verdrängt. Für beide beginnt nun eine emotionale Reise in eine versunkene Zeit.

Basierend auf dem „Schimmelreiter“-Roman „Hauke Haiens Tod“ von Andrea Paluch und Robert Habeck erzählt der Fernsehfilm auf zwei Zeitebenen von den dramatischen Geschehnissen in Stegebüll.

The flood - death at the dike

On a disastrous storm surge night on the North Sea coast in 2007, the young farm labourer Iven brings three-year-old Wienke, daughter of the dike count Hauke Haien and his wife Elke, to Hamburg and drops her off at a children's home. 15 years later, Iven himself ends up working as a bouncer in St Pauli when a headstrong young woman unexpectedly appears before him, demanding that he take her to the coast and help her find her parents. She wants to know who she is and where she comes from. Reluctantly, Iven takes Wienke back to the village of Stegebüll on the coast because he, too, has repressed the sinister past. For both of them, a dramatic and emotional journey into a lost time begins, in which the downfall of the dike count Hauke Haien and his family was inevitable.

Based on the “Schimmelreiter” novel “Hauke Haiens Tod” (The Death of Hauke Haien) by Andrea Paluch and Robert Habeck, this television film tells the story of the fateful events in Stegebüll on two time levels.
