THE MECHANICS führt die BetrachterInnen in die verborgene und fast verschwundene Welt der chinesischen Handwerksstätten in den labyrinthischen Straßen von Phnom Penh ein. Mekong-Schiffsmotoren werden sorgfältig und präzise von ölverschmierten Händen überholt, während direkt nebenan Friseure rasieren und Haare schneiden. Und das alles inmitten des geschäftigen Verkehrs und der wenigen Überreste des öffentlichen Raums. Ordentlich arrangierte konfuzianische Altäre schaffen eine private Oase neben dem chaotischen Treiben.
All das montiert und komponiert zu einer musikalischen Collage: Die kongenialen Tonschöpfungen des Klangkünstlers Makin Fung Bin Fai aus Hongkong treiben den Film voran. Ein sanfter Fluss eines Liedes, fast wie ein Requiem in einer sich verändernden Welt.
THE MECHANICS takes its viewers into the hidden and almost lost world of Chinese craft workshops on the labyrinthine streets of Phnom Penh in painterly compositions. Mekong ship engines are carefully and precisely overhauled by oil-smeared hands, whereas directly next door, barbers shave and cut hair. And all of this in the middle of busy traffic and the few remaining areas of public space. Neatly arranged Confucian altars create a private oasis juxtaposed in the chaotic hustle and bustle.
All of this arranged and assembled as a musical collage, congenially accentuated by the sound artist Makin Fung Bin Fai from Hong Kong. The gentle flow of a song, almost like a requiem in a changing world.
