Es ist fast so berühmt wie der Eiffelturm. Wie er prägt auch das Moulin Rouge die Weltmetropole Paris − als Wahrzeichen der Stadt, Selfie-Kulisse und Instagram-In-Motiv. Seit 1889 drehen sich die Windmühlenflügel unentwegt im Stadtteil Montmartre. Der Friedrichstadtpalast in Berlin hat in seiner über 100-jährigen Geschichte viele Umbrüche erlebt. Seine Bühne ist mit fast 3.000 Quadratmetern die größte Varietébühne der Welt.

Im Windmill Theatre in London wurde erstmals in England Nacktheit auf die Bühne gebracht. Der Trick: Unbekleidete Körper durften nur gezeigt werden, wenn sie sich nicht bewegten. Die „Nude Tableaus“ der „Windmill Girls“ waren Skandal und Attraktion zugleich. Mitten in Shanghai, der Metropole des modernen China, steht wie ein Denkmal für die goldenen Zeiten das Paramount. Erbaut 1933 als Prototyp der Art-déco-Architektur empfängt es noch heute Tanzbegeisterte aus aller Welt.

Die vierteilige Reihe PALÄSTE DER NACHT zeigt die Transformation dieser Gebäude im Laufe der Jahrzehnte auf architektonischer, künstlerischer und gesellschaftlicher Ebene.

Palaces of the night

It is almost as famous as the Eiffel Tower. Just like its fellow icon, the Moulin Rouge shapes the global metropolis of Paris - as a landmark of the city, a selfie backdrop and an Instagram motif. The windmill blades have been turning continuously in the Montmartre district since 1889. The Friedrichstadtpalast in Berlin has experienced several scene changes in its more than 100-year history. It is home to the largest variety stage in the world, which spans almost 3,000 square metres.

The Windmill Theatre in London brought nudity to the English stage for the first time. The trick: Naked bodies could only be shown if they were not moving. The nude tableaux vivants of the “Windmill Girls” were both a scandal and an attraction. In the middle of Shanghai, the metropolis of modern China, the Paramount Ballroom is a monument to the golden era. Built in 1933 as a prototype of Art déco architecture, it still welcomes twinkle toes and clodhoppers from all over the world.
