Eine Reise auf die Insel Usedom führt uns zu den Malern Oskar Manigk, Sabine Curio, Matthias Wegehaupt und Volker Köpp. In unterschiedlichen Situationen erleben wir mit ihnen und ihren Bildern Orte und Jahreszeiten und machen dabei Ausflüge in die Vergangenheit und Geschichte der Insel. In ironischer Rückbesinnung auf seine Kindheit im Elternhaus am Meer erzählt Heinz Brinkmann von seinen ersten Begegnungen mit diesen Malern, deren Leben in der Nachkriegszeit und ihren Zwängen mit der DDR-Kulturpolitik.
Es stehen nicht die Bilder im Vordergrund des Films, sondern ihr Entstehungsprozess. Dies hat mit Selbstbesinnung, souveräner, auch trotziger Lebenshaltung zu tun und lässt den Zuschauer staunend, vergnügt, amüsiert, betroffen, aber nie verzweifelt Anteil nehmen.
Island light - paintings of Usedom
A journey to the island of Usedom leads us to the painters Oskar Manigk, Sabine Curio, Matthias Wegehaupt and Volker Köpp. In a variety of situations we experience places and seasons with them and their paintings, taking us on a trip into the past and the history of the island. In ironic recollection of his childhood in his parents’ home next to the sea, Heinz Brinkmann recounts his first meetings with these painters, their lives in the post-war era, and their repression under the politics of the GDR regarding culture.
The paintings themselves are not the focal point of the film, but rather the process of their creation. This is closely related to self-reflection and a commanding yet defiant way of life, and leaves the observer with a feeling of astonishment, amusement and concern, but never with a feeling of despair.
