Eine einsame Insel, ein tropisches Paradies, so groß wie Kuba, mit Tier- und Pflanzenarten, die es nirgendwo sonst gibt - das klingt nach einem bekannten Filmstoff? Stimmt. Nur, diesen Jurassic Park gibt es tatsächlich - und er liegt mitten in Norddeutschland. Der Langenberg-Steinbruch nahe Goslar entpuppt sich als die „Insel der Dinosaurier“. Zur Urzeit war das Gebiet von Wasser bedeckt. Nur eine tropische Insel ragte hier aus dem Urzeitmeer. Pflanzenfresser wie der Europasaurus schrumpften aufgrund des begrenzten Nahrungsangebotes auf eine Größe, die es ihnen erlaubte, auf der Insel zu leben. Forscher untersuchen das Phänomen seit mehr als einem Jahrzehnt. Für sie ist der Langenberg-Steinbruch ein Paradies, in jeder Schicht finden sich versteinerte Zeugnisse der Erdgeschichte. Island of the dinosaurs

A solitary island, a tropical paradise the size of Cuba, with animal and plant species that can’t be found anywhere else - doesn’t this sound like the material for a well-known film? Indeed it does. The only difference is that this Jurassic Park really exists - and it is situated in the middle of northern Germany. The Langenberg quarry near Goslar turns out to be the “Island of the Dinosaurs”. In prehistoric times, this area was covered with water. Here, only a single tropical island protruded from the primeval sea. Owing to a limited food supply, herbivores such as the Europasaurus shrunk to a size that enabled them to live on the island. Researchers have been investigating this phenomenon for more than a decade. In their view, the Langenberg quarry is a paradise. For this is where you find fossilised evidence of our planet’s history layer upon layer. The report accompanies researchers and nature conservationists over a full year.
