Die Filme, die Hannovers Geschichte im 20. Jahrhundert spiegeln, sind vom Zerfall bedroht. Viele Dutzend 16-mm-Kopien, die meisten durch zahllose Vorführungen verschlissen, lagern verteilt in verschiedenen Institutionen. Die Filme sind kaum dokumentiert und archivisch nicht gesichert. In einigen Jahren wäre mit einem Totalverlust vieler Filme zu rechnen.

Die Gesellschaft für Filmstudien e.V. (GFS) bemüht sich seit Anfang 2004 in einem Projekt um die „Sicherung, Nutzbarmachung und Präsentation der ‚Hannover-Filme’“. Hierbei werden ausgewählte Filme restauriert und archivisch gesichert sowie die Hannover zeigenden Filme inhaltlich erfasst und in einer eigens entwickelten Datenbank gespeichert.

Die ersten Filme, die die GFS mit Mitteln des Projekts restauriert und durch neue Ausgangsmaterialien sowie neue Kopien gesichert hat, sind drei der bedeutendsten Hannover-Filme: der älteste erhaltene Hannover-Film GESICHT EINER STADT - HANNOVER UM 1930, der das Vorkriegs-Hannover lebendig werden lässt, MOSAIK EINER STADT (1960), der den Wiederaufbau resümiert, und DIE KUNST GEHT AUF DIE STRASSE, ein Film, der unterhaltsam die Aufbruchsstimmung in der Stadt um 1970 vermittelt.


The „Hannover Films 2004“ project - Conservation, restoration and presentation
 
Since the beginning of 2004 the „Gesellschaft für Filmstudien e.V. (GFS)” (Association of Film Studies) has taken steps to remedy this situation by initiating the project „conservation, restoration and presentation of the ‘Hannover Films’”. The aim of this project is to restore and safely archive selected films as well as to document the contents of the films depicting Hannover, and to store this information in a specially-developed database.

The first films to be restored and conserved by the GFS from project funds using new starting materials and the production new copies are three of the most important Hannover films: the oldest intact Hannover film FACE OF A CITY - HANNOVER AROUND 1930, which gives a vivid impression of Hannover during the pre-war years, MOSAIC OF A CITY (1960), which is a résumé of post-war reconstruction work, and ART TAKES TO THE STREETS, a film that entertainingly portrays the mood of optimism in the city around 1970.

The films depicting Hannover’s history in the 20th century are at risk of disintegrating. Many dozens of 16 mm copies, most of which are worn out due to numerous showings, are widely scattered and stored in different institutions. The films are hardly documented or preserved in archives. In several years time it is reckoned that many of these films will be lost forever.
