Die absolutistisch regierten Höfe blicken mit Abscheu auf den Emporkömmling, der sich das Vertrauen des geisteskranken dänischen Königs erworben, die Liebe seiner Frau, Königin Caroline Mathilde, erschlichen und revolutionäre Reformen in Dänemark in Gang gesetzt hat, die das fest gefügte, auf der Unterdrückung und Ausbeutung breiter Volkskreise beruhende Adelssystem in Bedrängnis bringen. Zwanzig Jahre vor der Französischen Revolution wagt es ein Bürgerlicher, an der Sonnenkönig-Herrlichkeit eines Monarchen zu rütteln. 1772 wird Struensee öffentlich vor 20.000 Menschen hingerichtet.

The docudrama tells the adventurous story of the charismatic personal physician to the king, Johann Friedrich Struensee, who was driven by the ideals of the Period of Enlightenment and caused a great stir throughout Europe around 1770. The courts, which were ruled by absolute monarchs, looked on the upstart with disgust. For he gained the trust of the insane Danish king, won over the love of his wife, queen Caroline Mathilde, by devious means, and set in motion revolutionary reforms in Denmark. These reforms put the rigidly-structured aristocratic system based on the oppression and exploitation of large sectors of the population under pressure. Twenty years before the French Revolution a commoner dared to jolt the Sun King glory of a monarch. Struensee was publicly executed in front of 20,000 people in 1772.
