1997 wurde im unwegsamen Grenzgebiet zwischen der Türkei und dem Irak eine junge deutsche Frau verhaftet. Ihr Bekenntnis zur verbotenen kurdischen PKK brachte ihr vor dem türkischen Staatssicherheitsgericht 15 Jahre Haft ein und katapultierte das Leben ihrer Familie in eine Art Ausnahmezustand.
Im Mittelpunkt des Films steht Doris J., 60 Jahre alt, Altenpflegerin in Hamburg. Der Film begleitet sie durch ihren Alltag in Hamburg sowie bei einer ihrer regelmäßigen Reisen in die Türkei, wo sie ihre Tochter besucht.
Ihre Geschichte ist die einer Hoffnung, über politische und geografische Grenzen hinweg und allen Widrigkeiten zum Trotz, so etwas wie eine Familie zu bleiben.
A family affair
Along the rugged frontier separating Turkey and Iraq a young German woman was arrested in 1997. After confessing to membership of the outlawed Kurdish PKK party she was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by the Turkish court of national security, which catapulted the life of her family into a sort of state of emergency.
Doris J., 60 years old, and a nurse in an old people’s home in Hamburg, is the central character in the film. The film accompanies her on her everyday life in Hamburg as well as on one of her regular trips to Turkey to visit her daughter.
Surpassing political and geographical divides, and despite all obstacles, her story is one of hope - the hope of preserving something resembling an intact family.
