Über 1.000 Meter hoch ragt der Brocken, der höchste Berg des Harzes, aus der flachen norddeutschen Landschaft. Kahl und windumpeitscht ist sein Gipfel, nebelverhangen und wasserreich seine bewaldeten Hänge. Der Harz ist Deutschlands nördlichstes Mittelgebirge. Wildkatze und Luchs streifen durch seine urigen Wälder, Auerhahn und Rothirsch leben hier. Das war nicht immer so: jahrhundertelang wurde das Gebirge durch Bergbau geschunden, entwaldet und leer geschossen. Heute kehrt mit Hilfe des Menschen die Natur allmählich zurück.

Ranger lenken die Touristenströme durch die neu entstandenen Nationalparks und erklären, warum der letzte frei lebende Luchs 1818 ausgerottet wurde und wie man ihn seit 1999 erfolgreich wieder angesiedelt hat. Wildnis ist im Harz noch nicht überall. Aber sie entsteht an vielen Orten.

The Harz - dark forests and lofty heights

The “Brocken”, the highest mountain in the Harz, rises over 1000 metres above the flat landscape of Northern Germany. Its summit is barren and battered by wind, and its wooded slopes are draped in mist and rich in water. The Harz is Germany’s most northerly low mountain range. Wild cats and lynxes rove through its ancient forests - this is the home of the wood grouse and the red deer. It wasn’t always like this: over many centuries the mountain range was disfigured by mining, deforested and robbed of animals by hunting. With the help of humans, nature is now gradually returning.

Rangers guide the flow of tourists through the newly-created national parks and explain why the last wild lynx was exterminated in 1818 and the successes of recolonisation since 1999. Wilderness is not apparent everywhere in the Harz. But it is returning in many places.
