Das Alte Land - Niedersachsens Obstgarten vor den Toren der Millionenstadt Hamburg ist untrennbar mit dem Apfel verbunden. Der Film erzählt Geschichten rund um die „Frucht der Erkenntnis“, von der Landschaft, die der Obstanbau prägt, von den Tieren, die von den Früchten leben, und von einem Mann, dem der Erhalt alter Apfelsorten zum Lebensinhalt geworden ist. Seit 20 Jahren züchtet Apfelbauer Eckart Brandt alte Apfelsorten. Doch nicht nur die Äpfel sind außergewöhnlich, die Streuobstwiesen von Eckart Brandt bieten einer Vielzahl von Tieren einen Lebensraum. Hier finden noch Steinkäuze Nisthöhlen, Honigbienen, Erdhummel und Admiral besuchen unbeschadet die Blüten im Frühjahr. Ein kleines Paradies, das in Zeiten von Globalisierung und EU-genormten Standardfrüchten selten geworden ist.

For 20 years the apple grower, Eckart Brandt, has cultivated old apple varieties. But not only are his apples extraordinary; Eckart Brandt’s meadows with a mixture of fruit trees provide a habitat for a whole range of animals. This is where screech owls still find nesting hollows, and where honey bees, bumble bees and red admirals visit the blossoms in spring. A miniature paradise, which has become scarce in an age of globalisation and EU-regulated standard fruit varieties.
