Basierend auf einem realen Ereignis erzählt der handgezeichnete Film BALENTES von den jugendlichen Freunden Ventura und Michele, die ihre spießige Umgebung nicht tolerieren und bei gemeinsamen Ausflügen zu Pferd von eigenen Freiheitsidealen träumen. In der Stadt erleben sie bestürzt die Machtdemonstrationen des faschistischen Regimes.

Durch eine Mutprobe auf die Idee gebracht, befreien sie mit idealistischen Absichten alle Pferde eines Militärgestüts im Norden der Insel, damit die Tiere nicht im Krieg sterben müssen. Doch auf dem Rückweg werden sie von Landmilizen abgefangen. Ihr Plan endet tragisch. Der sardische Ausdruck „Balentia“ bezeichnet eine Mutprobe und einen Akt der Rebellion.

Sardinia, 1940. On the eve of Italy joining World War II, and against a backdrop of fascism. The hand-drawn film “BALENTES” is based on real events and tells the story of Ventura and Michele, two teenage friends who are bored of their suburban existence and dream of their own ideals of freedom during joint horseback riding trips. In the city, they are dismayed by the fascist regime's demonstrations of power.

Inspired by a test of courage, they set out with idealistic intentions to free all the horses from a military-owned stud farm in the north of the island, so that the animals do not have to become casualties of the war. But on the way back, they are stopped by rural militiamen. Their plan has a tragic outcome. The Sardinian term “Balentia” is used to describe both a test of courage and an act of rebellion.
